Ruth Cadbury MP has welcomed the announcement by the UK Government that it will be rejoining the Erasmus Scheme, which will let 100,000 people from across the UK study in the EU. As a result of Brexit the UK had to withdraw from the Erasmus Scheme which deprived young people in Hounslow and Richmond of the chance to study and learn in Europe.
Speaking in the House of Commons Ruth praised the Government for rejoining Erasmus and pointed out that this would also benefit young people and mature students doing apprenticeships, learning new skills, or carrying out life-long learning in Europe. Youth and sports workers, as well as teachers will also be able to join the scheme.
Commenting in full about this announcement Ruth said,
‘‘I am delighted that the Government are giving young people across Hounslow and Richmond the chance to study and learn across Europe. Learning in a new country gives young people the opportunity to learn a new language, make new friends for life and forge a new direction for their life.
This new scheme will also benefit students who traditionally didn’t get a chance to use Erasmus such as mature students, those doing apprenticeships or those needing work placements as well as those working in sectors such as sport and youth work.
This comes alongside the Governments wider work to improve our relationship with the EU such as negotiating a new agreement to lower the price of food imports and to allow UK passengers to use passport E-Gates across Europe.
A closer relationship with Europe is good for our economy, good for our security and good for residents across West London. That’s why I fully support the Government in breaking down these barriers. ’’
