Ruth has welcomed a new agreement between the UK and EU which has been announced this week by the Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

This agreement will make several changes to improve the existing economic and political relationship between the UK and EU. Included in this agreement are changes to allow UK citizens to use EU e-gates when travelling abroad, a commitment to sign a veterinary agreement to help UK businesses export products to Europe and an agreement to negotiate a youth mobility scheme, which allows young people from the UK and EU to work without a visa.

Commenting in full Ruth said,

‘‘I welcome this much needed agreement between the UK and the EU. This deal will help lower bills, grow our economy and improve our security here at home.

It will make a big difference for Businesses across West London and will make it easier for us to trade with the EU, who remain our largest trading partners.  Businesses locally have told me that the previous trading relationship was simply not working and was making it difficult for them to import or export products from Europe. This agreement will cut red tape and help grow our economy, while bringing investment into London.

It’s very welcome that the Government are also ending the long queues that we’ve faced when travelling in Europe and will allow UK citizens to use the EU passport gates, while also making it easier to bring pets in and out of the UK via Europe.  I’m also very pleased the Government are working on a youth mobility scheme which I called for earlier this year. This scheme would let young people locally go and work in Europe which helps them learn a language, develop new skills, and make long lasting connections. I’m proud to represent a constituency with a large number of Europeans in it, and where we have close and historic links with Europe.  Previous Governments failed to work together with the EU which damaged our economy, weakened our security and left us with sluggish growth.

I’m pleased that Keir Starmer is showing that a difference approach is possible and is standing up for the UK on the world stage and working pragmatically with our friends and partners in Europe.’’
