Ruth Cadbury MP urges the Prime Minister to push ahead with Leasehold Reform at Prime Ministers Questions

Ruth Cadbury MP has used her question at PMQs to urge the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to push ahead with the Government’s planned reforms to end the ‘feudal’ leasehold system, which is impacting leaseholders across England.

In her question to the Prime Minister, Ruth asked when the Government would publish its Leasehold and Commonhold Reform Bill, which would bring forward new protections for both existing and future leaseholders. In response, the Prime Minister confirmed that the Government will be bringing forward a draft bill in ‘due course’.

Commenting in full after her question, Ruth said,

‘‘So many leaseholders and social tenants across my constituency are being fleeced by the feudal leasehold system, with their service charges and building insurance continuing to rise every year.

‘‘The leasehold system is fuelling the cost‑of‑living crisis, as so many people are facing huge costs simply to live in their own home. Additionally, many leaseholders locally are still unable to sell or remortgage their homes due to building safety faults, cladding, or problems with their lease.

‘‘That’s why I’m committed to campaigning to support leaseholders locally and to fixing our antique and outdated laws. I’m pleased the Prime Minister confirmed the Government will be introducing a new law to fix the leasehold system.’’
