Ruth Cadbury MP writes to Chancellor calling for urgent action on climate crisis.

Ruth Cadbury MP has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak to call on the Government to take urgent action on the impact that the UK’s housing stock has on greenhouse gas emissions.

In her letter Ruth called on the Government to take action, after a recent report by Greenpeace found that 14% of the UKs emissions come from homes. Pointing to the importance of installing new technologies such as heat pumps Ruth highlighted the work of Hounslow Council in fitting heat pumps in new council housing, while calling for the Chancellor and the Government to act before the COP26 summit in Glasgow.

Speaking in full Ruth said,

‘‘The climate crisis is the biggest issue facing our country, and we need to see bold action from Government Ministers. This includes on housing where we still need to make huge progress to improve energy efficiency of homes in the UK.

However rather than act the Government have sat back and cut over £1 billion in funding from the Green Homes grant. This is crucial funding that could have supported both residents and local businesses in

Hounslow, and helped to retrofit new green technologies.

The Government and the Chancellor need to wake up and tackle the climate crisis. The time for warm words has passed- we need to see action.’’
