Ruth Cadbury MP “appalled” at rising poverty as she helps collect food donations and Local Council fund Shelter Project

This week the Rowntree Foundation released figures showing a rise in poverty, while in Hounslow the local Foodbank has had to increase its food packages and the Council are funding a Shelter Project over Winter.

Ruth Cadbury MP for Brentford and Isleworth said: “The government has failed to continue the last Labour Government’s successful work of tackling poverty. I’m appalled at the poverty, hunger and homelessness this Government’s cuts and failure to act has resulted in.”

The Rowntree foundation found 400,000 more children and 300,000 more pensioners are stricken by poverty than from 2012 to 2013.This is the first recording of an increase in child and pensioners poverty in twenty years. This substantial increase is directly correlated to the lack of support and assistance this current government is providing in tackling the causes of poverty.

Ruth Cadbury MP sought charitable donations in Osterley Tesco’s for those stricken by the effects of poverty last week. The public kindly gave donations of food that they purchased in Tesco to help the cause

Hounslow Council are funding the Shelter Project Hounslow again this Winter, which provides shelter and support for rough sleeping men referred by various organisations. This project provides the homeless males shelter in local churches as oppose to seeking refuge on the streets.

Also in the Brentford and Isleworth, Hounslow Foodbox is helping to tackle food poverty – moving from 3 days food to 7 days for all those referred to them, and supporting universal credit applicants from the day the claim is made to the day payment is received.

Ruth Cadbury MP said: “It’s really worrying that there will be families round here who will have no Christmas dinner, nothing for the children, no presents for the children.”
