Ruth Cadbury MP calls on Government to expand financial support to fix the gaps

In a speech delivered virtually to the House of Commons on Tuesday (12th January) Ruth Cadbury MP urged the Government to provide urgent financial support in this third lockdown for those who keep missing out.

Having heard from so many constituents struggling to make ends meet, Ruth used her speech to urge the Government to make changes to Universal Credit and end the exclusion of the 3 million “Excluded” who the Government have declared ineligible for its new support packages.

As so many of her constituents are badly affected by the downturn in aviation, she also used her speech to urge the Government to give the aviation sector and aviation communities like Hounslow the support they need.

Speaking after her speech Ruth said,

‘‘I know how tough the last few weeks and months have been for many people locally.

That’s why I urged the Government to make urgent changes to the economic support which will go a long way to help many of my constituents whose income has crashed over the last 10 months.

Universal credit claims have more than doubled in my constituency and many residents have told me that it barely or fails to cover the cost of their rent, while those with mortgages have to wait for  9 months to get additional support.

On top of that the Government need to stop sitting on their hands and give those working in the aviation sector the support they desperately need. Over 20,000 jobs in Hounslow rely on the sector and the supply chain and we need to see action from the Government.

Finally, I urged the Government to end the injustice of excluding people from financial support- so many people locally from a wide range of sectors, such as the self-employed and those who started their own business have not been treated fairly.

I will continue to stand up and urge the Government to take the much-needed steps to support residents and local businesses during this difficult time.’’
